Don’t Wait: Prevent Damage From Smoke Residues

After a fire, one of the greatest threats to your home is smoke damage. Smoke residues are acidic, and can cause permanent corrosion, staining, and discoloration damage to even the strongest and hardest materials over time. During a fire, the inside of your home can become pressurized, forcing smoke residues deep into cracks, building materials, electronics, and more.

The type of smoke residues present after a fire depend on various factors including temperatures and materials burned:

Wet Smoke Residue: This type of smoke residue is often sticky, odorous, and smears when wiped. Wet smoke occurs when a fire is smoldering or has low-heat.

Dry Smoke Residue: Dry smoke leaves a fine, powder-like dusting. This type of smoke occurs with fast and hot fires.

Protein Residue: Most common with cooking fires, protein residues are highly odorous and may not be visible on surfaces, often resulting in discoloration of paints and varnishes.

Additional Residues: Various other residues including fire extinguisher chemicals, tear gas, fingerprint powder, and other chemicals must also be cleaned to prevent damage and restore a clean and healthy environment.

"My family suffered a house fire in January of 2019, and through the year Emily and her team have been so very kind and courteous. Emily is kind, responsive and understanding. She responded to our requests when we figured out we needed some things that had been put in storage, and she worked with us to deliver our furniture and reschedule a day for unpacking without having to wait several days. Brett, Maria, Justyna and Heimii were very kind and helpful when they came to unpack and even helped me to move furniture a couple of times to make sure it was just right. They removed all the boxes and garbage from my home, all while being very kind and courteous. I’m so grateful for their services during this challenging year; they made our transitions much easier and I’m very thankful that we were able to use them!"

Steps to Take After a Fire

What To Do Right Away (And What Not To Do)

After a fire, there are some things you can do to protect your home and minimize the damage. These tips are meant as a guide, and you should only address these items if it is safe to do so. Always use extreme caution and follow all orders given to you by the fire department or first responders.

DO’s

  • Individuals with a medical condition or chemical sensitivities should move to a clean environment if they experience dizziness or nausea. Should symptoms persist, seek medical attention.
  • Open windows and doors in the affected area to allow smoke out and clean air in.
  • Close doors to areas that were unaffected by the fire or smoke.
  • Remove and relocate any pets to a safe, clean environment.
  • Call GCPRO’s 24-hour disaster response line at 847-656-3322.
  • Call your Insurance Company.
  • Begin to inventory and document your items.
  • Remove all items from your refrigerator and freezer and leave the doors open.
  • If your HVAC system is operational, change the furnace filter.
  • Secure damp cheesecloth over air vents to capture any loose soot in the air.

DON’Ts

  • Don’t enter the home unless you are sure that it is safe and structurally sound.
  • Do not use any electronic equipment or appliances. Unplug these items and have these items checked and cleaned thoroughly by a qualified technician before use.
  • Do not use ceiling lights if the ceiling is wet; a short circuit could result.
  • Don’t try to remove smoke residues. Water or soap may cause additional damage, and you may make the smoke residues more difficult to remove.
  • Do not attempt to clean your carpets. Rely on a professional with experience with smoke damage.
  • Don’t consume any food items exposed to high heat or smoke. Even sealed or canned items can be dangerous.
  • Avoid using upholstered furniture, walking on smoke-damaged carpets, or handling draperies.
  • Do not take clothing, draperies, linens etc., to a dry cleaner. These items require special equipment and procedures to fully remove soot and smoke odor.
